Google is trying to provide the free internet for selected apps in all Android One Smartphone in India. This is another attempt by Google to lower the cost of Internet to users. Earlier News:
Google already tied up with Airtel to provide a free Internet zone where users could access some services including Google Search for free
RCom partnering with Facebook to provide free access to some websites as well as Facebook to all reliance users
Instead of just providing free access to certain services, Google is reportedly acting as a middleman between carriers and app developers. Known in the industry as zero-rating, Google would monitor data usage when a user uses any of the app partner’s app and would pay the carrier the requisite fee.The app developers would then pay Google a part of the fee.
According to the report, Google has already been in talks with Flipkart, Snapdeal, Ola Cabs and Redbus. The project would be initially tried on Android One smartphones and could eventually be launched on all Android smartphones later.
Google could use its own content delivery network infrastructure to deliver the data more effectively. Facebook has done something similar with RCom to ensure that the data transmission is compressed and uses lesser bandwidth.
